Description

Crispy Chili Beef is a flavorful dish featuring thinly sliced flank steak coated in a crispy batter, sautéed with colorful bell peppers, and tossed in a savory chili sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound flank steak, thinly sliced against the grain
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil (for frying)
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon chili paste (adjust to taste)
  • 1 red bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 green bell pepper, sliced
  • 2 green onions, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine cornstarch, flour, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Toss the sliced flank steak in the mixture until well coated.
  2. Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the coated beef in batches, frying until golden brown and crispy, about 3-4 minutes per batch. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together soy sauce, brown sugar, rice vinegar, and chili paste. Set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, remove excess oil, leaving about 1 tablespoon. Add the sliced red and green bell peppers, sautéing for 2-3 minutes until slightly tender.
  5. Pour the sauce over the peppers in the skillet and bring to a simmer. Add the crispy beef back into the skillet, tossing to coat everything in the sauce. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until heated through.
  6. Garnish with chopped green onions and sesame seeds if desired. Serve hot.

Notes

  • For a healthier version, bake the coated beef in a preheated oven at 400°F for 20 minutes, flipping halfway through, instead of frying.
  • Add vegetables like broccoli or snap peas for extra nutrition and color.
