Description

French Onion Pasta is a creamy and flavorful dish that combines the rich taste of caramelized onions with pasta, creating a delightful meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 ounces pasta (such as fettuccine or penne)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 4 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup grated Gruyère cheese (or Swiss cheese)
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Cook the pasta according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  2. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring frequently, for about 15-20 minutes until they are caramelized and golden brown.
  3. Stir in the minced garlic, sugar, salt, black pepper, thyme, and red pepper flakes (if using). Cook for an additional 2 minutes until fragrant.
  4. Pour in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, bringing the mixture to a simmer. Let it cook for about 5 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
  5. Reduce the heat to low and stir in the heavy cream, Gruyère cheese, and Parmesan cheese until melted and creamy.
  6. Add the cooked pasta to the sauce, tossing to coat evenly. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until heated through.
  7. Serve immediately, garnished with fresh parsley.

Notes

  • For a vegetarian version, substitute beef broth with vegetable broth and use a plant-based cheese.
  • Add cooked mushrooms or spinach for extra flavor and nutrition.
