Frikadellen: The Heart of German Comfort Food

Frikadellen are juicy, flavorful German meat patties made with a mix of ground beef and pork, aromatic seasonings, and a crispy golden crust. These hearty delights are a staple in German cuisine, perfect for pairing with potato salad or crusty rye bread.

Ingredients

  • Ground beef and pork mix
  • Stale bread or breadcrumbs
  • Milk
  • Egg
  • Onion, finely chopped
  • Parsley, chopped
  • Mustard
  • Paprika
  • Salt and pepper
  • Butter or oil

Instructions

Soften the Bread

  • Soak stale bread in milk until soft, then squeeze out excess liquid. If using breadcrumbs, mix them directly with milk until slightly moistened.

2. Mix the Ingredients

  • In a bowl, combine the ground meat, egg, onion, parsley, mustard, paprika, salt, and pepper with the softened bread.
  • Gently mix with your hands until well incorporated but avoid overworking the mixture.

3. Shape the Patties

  • Divide the mixture into equal portions and shape into oval patties, about ¾-inch thick.

4. Cook to Perfection

  • Heat butter or oil in a skillet over medium heat.
  • Fry the patties for 4-5 minutes per side until golden brown and cooked through, reaching an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C).

5. Rest and Serve

  • Let the Frikadellen rest for a few minutes before serving to retain their juiciness.

Notes

  • For Extra Flavor: Add a dash of nutmeg or garlic powder.
  • Crispier Texture: Lightly coat patties with flour before frying.
  • Perfect Pairing: Serve with potato salad, sauerkraut, or fresh rye bread.
  • Meal Prep Friendly: Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 3 days, great for sandwiches!
