Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Activate yeast by stirring together warm milk and active dry yeast. Let sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. Mix egg, melted butter, and vanilla extract in a large bowl until combined.
  3. In a stand mixer, combine flour, granulated sugar, salt, and cinnamon. Add yeast mixture to wet ingredients then mix until dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough for about 5 minutes until smooth and slightly sticky, adding flour as necessary.
  5. Place kneaded dough in a greased bowl to rise for about 1 hour, covered, until doubled in size.
  6. Punch down the dough and let it rise again for another hour.
  7. Cut the dough into 16 pieces, roll into ropes, twist into shapes, and pinch ends together.
  8. Let the twisted donuts rest for about 30 minutes on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  9. Heat oil to 325°F and fry each donut for about 5 minutes until golden brown.
  10. Transfer fried donuts to paper towels, then toss in cinnamon-sugar mixture while warm.
