  • 1 lb Mussels Fresh or frozen, thaw if frozen
  • 3 cloves Garlic Minced
  • 1 cup All-Purpose Flour Gluten-free flour can be used
  • 1/2 cup Cornstarch Can substitute with potato starch
  • 1 tsp Salt Adjust to taste
  • 1/2 tsp Pepper Adjust to taste
For Frying
  • 3 cups Oil Vegetable oil

Method
 

Step-by-Step Instructions for Crispy Tahong
  1. Clean the mussels by rinsing them under cold running water to remove any debris and sand. Scrub the shells with a brush and dry them.
  2. Prepare the batter by mixing all-purpose flour, cornstarch, garlic, salt, and pepper until evenly combined.
  3. Coat each mussel in the batter, making sure to shake off excess batter.
  4. Heat the vegetable oil in a deep pan over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
  5. Fry the mussels in small batches for about 3-5 minutes until they're golden brown and crispy.
  6. Remove the mussels from the oil and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil before serving.

Notes

For best results, serve immediately after frying and consider offering a spicy vinegar dip on the side.
