Ingredients
  

For the Tofu
  • 1 block Extra firm tofu Frozen and thawed for denser texture
  • 1 cup Vegan chicken broth Vegetable broth works as a great substitute
For the Buttermilk Mixture
  • 1 cup Soy milk Can substitute with any plant-based milk
  • 1 tbsp Apple cider vinegar Lemon juice can be used as an alternative
  • 1 tbsp Hot sauce Adjust to taste for desired heat
For the Bread Coating
  • 1 cup Flour Gluten-free flour mix can be used
  • 1/4 cup Cornstarch Potato starch can also be used
  • 1/4 cup Cornmeal Can skip for a finer coating
For Flavor Enhancement
  • 1 tbsp Oregano Italian seasoning can substitute
  • 1 tbsp Creole seasoning Cayenne pepper can replace for spice
  • 1 tsp Garlic powder
  • 1 tsp Onion powder
  • 1 tsp Paprika
  • 1/2 tsp Black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp White pepper

Method
 

Step-by-Step Instructions for Tofu Fried Chicken
  1. Freeze the tofu overnight, then thaw for at least 30 minutes. Press gently to remove excess moisture.
  2. Cut the tofu into cubes and marinate in vegan chicken broth for at least 15 minutes.
  3. Mix soy milk, apple cider vinegar, and hot sauce in a bowl and let sit for 10 minutes to thicken.
  4. Whisk together flour, cornstarch, cornmeal, oregano, Creole seasoning, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, black and white pepper.
  5. Heat oil in a skillet to 370°F (187°C) for frying.
  6. Dip marinated tofu in buttermilk and then coat with the dry breading mixture. Repeat for extra crunch if desired.
  7. Fry the breaded tofu cubes in batches for about 3-4 minutes until golden brown and crispy.
  8. Remove from oil and let drain on paper towels. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauces.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days. For longer storage, freeze unbattered tofu cubes for up to 2 months.
