Preparation
  1. Peel, core, and slice the apples into thin wedges.
  2. Melt the unsalted butter in a saucepan over medium heat, then incorporate brown sugar and cinnamon until smooth.
  3. Pour the caramel mixture into a greased 9-inch round cake pan.
  4. Arrange the apple wedges over the caramel in a circular pattern.
  5. Whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in one bowl. In another, cream sugar and eggs, then stir in vanilla and milk before combining wet and dry ingredients.
  6. Pour the batter over the apples in the pan and bake at 350°F (175°C) for about 40 minutes.
  7. Allow to cool in the pan for 10 minutes before inverting onto a serving plate.
