- Prepare the hoagie rolls by slicing them open. Spread mayonnaise on both sides and drizzle with ketchup. Add iceberg lettuce and tomato slices. Set aside.
- Heat a cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat, add neutral oil, and sauté the diced onion for 3-4 minutes until softened and golden brown. Push to the side.
- Add ground beef to the skillet, sear without stirring for 90 seconds, then chop into smaller pieces and mix with the onions. Season with salt and pepper.
- Divide the beef and onion mixture into two portions, place cheese slices on top, cover with a lid to melt for 30 seconds.
- Scoop the cheesy beef mixture into prepared hoagie rolls and serve immediately.
Notes
For a spicy version, add pickled jalapeños while cooking the onions. Optionally use ground turkey or chicken for a leaner meal.
