Ingredients

  • 2 lbs sirloin steak – sliced into thin 4-inch-long strips
  • Salt and black pepper – to taste
  • 1 cup soy sauce – regular or low-sodium
  • 1 cup beef broth – or beef stock for a richer flavor
  • ¼ cup oyster sauce – for depth and umami
  • cup brown sugar – light or dark
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil – adds a nutty aroma
  • 1 tsp garlic – minced fresh or jarred
  • 3 tbsp cornstarch – thickens the sauce
  • 1 head of broccoli – cut into florets
  • Sesame seeds – for garnish

Method

  1. Step 1: Prep the Beef
  2. Place the sliced sirloin steak at the bottom of a 7-quart slow cooker.
  3. Season with salt and black pepper to taste.
Step 2: Mix the Sauce
  1. In a bowl, whisk together soy sauce, beef broth, oyster sauce, brown sugar, sesame oil, and garlic.
  2. Add cornstarch and whisk until smooth with no lumps.
Step 3: Let the Magic Happen
  1. Pour the sauce over the beef, ensuring even coverage.
Cover and cook:
  1. Low heat: 5–6 hours
  2. High heat: 3.5–5 hours
  3. Stir occasionally for even cooking.
Step 4: Add the Broccoli
  1. Thirty minutes before serving, toss in the broccoli florets.
  2. Stir occasionally to coat them in the sauce and let them steam until tender.
Step 5: Serve and Savor
  1. Using tongs, serve the beef and broccoli over steamed white rice, brown rice, or jasmine rice.
  2. Garnish with sesame seeds (and sliced green onions if desired).

Notes

  • If you prefer extra tender beef, marinate it in 1 tablespoon of cornstarch mixed with a bit of soy sauce before adding it to the slow cooker.
  • For a thicker sauce, remove ½ cup of the cooking liquid, mix with an additional 1 tbsp cornstarch, and stir it back into the slow cooker 15 minutes before serving.
  • Serve with extra oyster sauce or soy sauce for added richness.
