Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. In a large mixing bowl, blend together 1 can of sweetened condensed milk and ½ cup of softened unsalted butter using a hand mixer or whisk until the mixture is smooth and creamy.
  2. Gradually sift in 4 cups of powdered sugar while continuing to mix on low speed until the mixture resembles a thick dough-like consistency.
  3. Stir in 1 teaspoon of peppermint extract and if desired, a few drops of food coloring, folding until evenly distributed.
  4. If the dough feels too soft, place it in the refrigerator for 10-15 minutes to firm up.
  5. Take small portions of chilled dough and roll them into balls about 1 inch in diameter or use cookie cutters for fun shapes.
  6. Allow the shaped mints to set at room temperature for about 1 hour.
  7. Transfer the mints to an airtight container and store at room temperature for up to one week.

Notes

For a festive touch, roll finished mints in crushed peppermint candies or sprinkles before they set.
