  • 1 cup Sliced Carrots can substitute chopped bell peppers
  • 1 cup Sliced Sweet Potatoes can substitute regular potatoes
  • 1 cup Diced Apples use tart varieties like Granny Smith
  • 1 teaspoon Onion Powder can use fresh diced onions
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic Powder can use minced fresh garlic
  • to taste Salt
  • to taste Pepper
For the Spice Blend
  • 1 teaspoon Rubbed Sage can substitute dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon Cinnamon or substitute with allspice
  • 1 teaspoon Nutmeg or substitute with allspice
For the Chili Base
  • 1 pound Ground Turkey can substitute ground chicken
  • 2 tablespoons Tomato Paste can substitute tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons Chili Powder adjust based on spice preference
  • 1 can Crushed Tomatoes canned tomato sauce can also work
  • 1 can Strained Tomatoes canned tomato sauce can serve a similar purpose
For the Protein Boost
  • 1 can Kidney Beans can be omitted for low-carb
  • 1 can Black Beans can be omitted for low-carb

Method
 

Steps
  1. Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium heat until shimmering, about 1-2 minutes.
  2. Add the diced apples, sliced carrots, sliced sweet potatoes, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, pepper, rubbed sage, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Sauté for about 5 minutes.
  3. Add the ground turkey, breaking apart with a spoon, and cook for about 5 minutes until browned.
  4. Stir in the tomato paste and chili powder, mixing thoroughly, and allow to bloom for about 2 minutes.
  5. Pour in the crushed tomatoes and strained tomatoes, stirring well, and bring to a gentle simmer. Simmer for about 20-30 minutes.
  6. If desired, stir in the kidney beans and black beans and allow everything to warm through for an additional 5 minutes.

Notes

Adjust the spice levels and add fresh herbs before serving for a fresher taste. Maintain the crunch of the apples by adding them towards the end of cooking.
